The 2010, a real opportunity to fast track tourism development

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is a mega-event. With 32 of the world’s best national teams competing in 64 matches, watched by almost 3 million spectators and billions of viewers around the world, the event
does present significant tourism business opportunities, i.e.,

  1. Increase in tourist arrivals
    • Increase tourism revenue by 2010 and beyond through the event.
  2. Tourism development
    • Upgrade the tourism supply-side to supplement shortage of demand in South Africa.
  3. Widespread media exposure and focus on South Africa
    • Enhance the region ‘s brand as a global tourist destination of choice.

In general, there are threefold tourism business related opportunities around the event.

Firstly, there will be an increase in tourist arrivals in the region during the event.

Secondly, there will be widespread media exposure and focus on South Africa before and during the event.

Thirdly, there will be displaced tourists to South Africa i.e. the non-football lovers not wishing to be in South Africa during the 2010 event.

Preparation by the region to host the event.

In August, 2004 in Mauritius, SADC Council mandated Ministers responsible for Sport, Tourism and Information to develop a strategy to ensure that the SADC region benefits from the hosting by South Africa of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Council further directed that the Regional Tourism Organization of Southern Africa (RETOSA) be responsible for the development of a regional Plan for effective participation by Member States in the 2010 event. Council also directed that the SADC Secretariat, through RETOSA should ensure that the Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) in SADC be positioned as anchor products for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and that all Member States should be invited to participate in the development of the TFCA sub action plan.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Regional Tourism Organizing  Plan

Objectives;

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Regional Tourism Organising Plan is informed by, and aligned to the broader goals of South Africa, namely, the hosting of a world-class African World Cup, ensuring a lasting social legacy and spreading the benefits derived from hosting the event to the rest of the continent.
The Plan is further informed by the tourism sector goals of National Tourism Growth Strategies and the Global Competitiveness of the Region’s tourism industry, to contribute to sustainable National GDP, job creation, and redistribution of equitable social-economic benefits.

Key objectives of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Regional Tourism Organising Plan are to:

  • Contribute towards hosting a successful FIFA World Cup in 2010
  • Maximise tourism value from the event
  • Enable African countries, especially SADC countries to benefit from the event
  • Maximise the opportunity to brand the Southern Africa region as a preferred tourism destination
  • Kick start a developmental and social legacy through fast tracking tourism competitiveness to support the objectives of creating jobs, growth and equity

Meeting these objectives will require SADC governments (national, local and provincial/regional), the tourism industry (retailers and wholesalers of products and packages, tour operators, product owners, the service providers etc.) and broader stakeholders to jointly address key tourism challenges to ensure that the industry as a whole capitalises on opportunities arising from the event.

Interventions required by SADC Member States could be in the following areas:

  • Information and transactional fulfilment;
  • Destination Marketing and branding;
  • Accommodation;
  • Transport;
  • Tourist safety & security;
  • Skills and service levels;
  • Events;
  • Attractions;
  • Bidding for pre-event match practices and friendlies;
  • Familiarization with FIFA guidelines and requirements.

TFCAs and TFPs - Tours and Safaris in Southern Africa – The Essence of Africa Route

A Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA) is an area straddling across two or more international borders where the natural and cultural resources are collaboratively managed by the governments/authorities involved. A Transfrontier Park (TFP) is an area where two or more protected areas are adjoined and collaboratively managed across international borders.

What is Boundless Southern Africa?
“Boundless Southern Africa” is the brand chosen by nine Southern African countries as a means of showcasing the Transfrontier Conservation Areas straddling the SADC region. Launched at the Tourism Indaba in Durban on 10 May 2008, 'Boundless Southern Africa' was created as a consolidated marketing strategy for the TFCAs.

Why TFCAs?
When the Berlin Treaty was signed in 1884, African territories were dealt like a pack of cards to colonial powers. The national borders then proclaimed cut across tribal and clan groupings as well as animal migration routes, fragmenting ecosystems and destroying biodiversity. African countries in collaboration with the Peace Parks Foundation are trying to rectify this situation through the establishment of TFCAs and TFPs, which are designed to restore these ecosystems enabling the free movement of wildlife and tourists.

TFCAs and the 2010 FIFA World Cup
The motivation for bidding to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa was based on the understanding that it would not only benefit South Africa but also the SADC region and Africa as a whole.

Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) have been identified as one of six Legacy Projects of the 2010 FIFA World Cup for their potential to spread the tourism benefits of hosting the World Cup in Africa through branding and marketing the region as a favourable tourism and investment destination.

The purpose of the “TFCA Development Strategy for 2010 and beyond” is to increase the tourism potential of Southern Africa by consolidating the marketing, infrastructure development and investment promotion efforts of existing Transfrontier Conservation Initiatives and utilise the 2010 FIFA World Cup as a platform to initiate a long-term investment and marketing strategy for TFCAs.
